Yo La Tengo "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out" (2000)
Wow. This is a dense album. It feels like there should be some odd critical phrase used to describe Yo La Tengo albums -- perhaps "intelligensia-rock" or "smartcore". I don't think that this would fall into Simon Reynolds' "record collector rock" -- the influences are clearly there, but more to be implied than as outright rips of riffs etc... But this is clearly a record meant to rock the head, not the heart, butt or balls. It's a long album, but it does pay off. A real gem.
