The Ettes "Look at Life Again Soon" (2008)

As much as I disdain identity politics, it's hard for that spectre not to emerge when thinking about this record.  The band name alone sort of invites it.  What is remarkable to me is that it is not particularly remarkable in terms of gender statements.  While the trope of the "rocking woman" is still a minority, it's clearly more than a novelty in the 21st century.  So The Ettes powerful female voice leaves me saying... "so what?".

This is a solid garage revival album, but one that relies a bit too heavily on gimmickry... the guitar effects, the reverb added to the vocals.  Coming so late into the game, the bar has been raised quite a bit, & a record needs more to really stand out.
